With our planet in danger – what could future Olympic events look like?
| | Dear Carlos, The Olympics in Tokyo are in full swing, with athletes from across the world competing for gold. But – with our planet in danger – what could the Olympics of the future look like? Nature is being lost at a rate unprecedented in human history. Average global temperatures have risen by more than 1.0°C since pre-industrial times – dangerously close to breaching the critical 1.5 degree increase that would cause irreversible change. We are witnessing a planetary emergency, and the impacts will be felt – and, in some cases, are already being felt – by each and every one of us, no matter where we are in the world. This means all areas of our lives, including sports, are at risk. So, what can we do? If we join the same team that's working together to safeguard the future, we can make a change. And while we may not all be world-class athletes, we can all become champions for our planet and everyone we share it with.
