WWF International - "Restoring the moon bear population" 2021

Asiatic black bears – also known as moon bears – face an uncertain future, mostly due to deforestation and hunting across their Asian homelands. And though hunting and international trade in these bears is prohibited in many countries, these harmful activities still continue. But there are signs of hope.

Conservationists in South Korea are now in the process of restoring the country's native bear population, and the initial outcome is good news for the species.

To find out more about how conservationists are managing this ambitious project, conservation biologist Joshua Powell travelled to Jirisan National Park, a mountainous region in the far south of the Korean Peninsula.

Here's what he found once he got there:

James Arthur - "Say You Won't Let Go"

"Say You Won't Let Go"

Lyrics:

I met you in the dark, you lit me up

You made me feel as though I was enough

We danced the night away, we drank too much

I held your hair back when

You were throwing up

Then you smiled over your shoulder

For a minute, I was stone-cold sober

I pulled you closer to my chest

And you asked me to stay over

I said, I already told ya

I think that you should get some rest

I knew I loved you then

But you'd never know

'Cause I played it cool when I was scared of letting go

I know I needed you

But I never showed

But I wanna stay with you until we're grey and old

Just say you won't let go

Just say you won't let go

I'll wake you up with some breakfast in bed

I'll bring you coffee with a kiss on your head

And I'll take the kids to school

Wave them goodbye

And I'll thank my lucky stars for that night

When you looked over your shoulder

For a minute, I forget that I'm older

I wanna dance with you right now

Oh, and you look as beautiful as ever

And I swear that everyday'll get better

You make me feel this way somehow

I'm so in love with you

And I hope you know

Darling your love is more than worth its weight in gold

We've come so far my dear

Look how we've grown

And I wanna stay with you until we're grey and old

Just say you won't let go

Just say you won't let go

I wanna live with you

Even when we're ghosts

'Cause you were always there for me when I needed you most

I'm gonna love you till

My lungs give out

I promise till death we part like in our vows

So I wrote this song for you, now everybody knows

Finally it's just you and me till we're grey and old

Just say you won't let go

Just say you won't let go

Just say you won't let go

Oh, just say you won't let go

Weekly roundup 26th September

In this week's round-up, we've put together a few stories for you to read through as you take a moment to yourself. From a first-hand account of rhino conservation to exciting developments in nature protection, your friends at WWF hope you'll find these pieces inspiring.

No matter how much we learn about it, nature continues to surprise us, and the story of how bee species manage to thrive in the desert is just one example. These essential pollinators play a key role in our lives, helping sustain crops which feed us. We can protect them in return by looking at what's on our plate. Read on to learn more. Finally, take a peek at this year's winners of the Ocean Photographer of the Year competition – we hope you enjoy it!

World Rhino Day

This week marked World Rhino Day, and serves as a reminder of all the remarkable work conservationists around the globe have done to safeguard these magnificent animals. Here's an account from a researcher of what working with rhinos is like:

Desert valley is home to 500 bee species

You may not expect to see much in the middle of the desert, so it probably comes as a surprise to read that one such place is home to the highest concentration of bee species in the world. So, what's the story of how these endangered pollinators thrive there?

How food impacts our climate

It seems obvious, but sometimes we need a reminder: food comes from nature. This means everything we eat has an impact on the planet – from how it's grown to how it's cooked. And right now, a lot of that impact is contributing to the climate crisis – but we can change this together:
