Save the Children has served communities in Afghanistan since 1976. As violence escalates, we remain committed to doing everything we can to help children in Afghanistan, as well as all those who have fled the violence in search of safety in the U.S. or elsewhere.

In times of crisis, this community's support is more impactful than ever, and that is why we are urgently asking for your help right now. Please, will you rush an emergency donation to support Afghan child refugees in this moment of immense need?

Tens of thousands of Afghan civilians have been evacuated within the last week. They've left their homes and belongings behind. Many hope to build a better, safer life for their children. Now it is up to all of us to ensure those children are protected during this moment of crisis and empowered to pursue the brighter future they deserve.

"Save the Children is committed to ensuring Afghan children and their families are safe and protected as they seek refuge in America, and can begin to look toward a brighter future," says Janti Soeripto, Save the Children President and CEO.

Save the Children has mobilized here in the United States to support the most urgent needs of Afghan refugees as they arrive. No matter what happens, we will make sure children are supported and protected, but we are counting on you to help provide the resources and care they need.

Please, will you rush an emergency donation immediately to help protect Afghan children as they flee escalating violence? Your gift can help them build a brighter future.

Thank you for making a life-changing difference for children at this incredibly impactful time.

Weekly roundup 29th August

Can you believe August is coming to a close? From the critical IPCC climate report to raging wildfires across the globe, we've seen stark reminders this month of what life looks like on a changing planet. But among all of the dire news, there have been snippets of positivity too. And this week's newsletter highlights some of those moments.

From efforts to save cheetahs to countries potentially teaming up to phase out fossil fuels to protect our planet, there are some remarkable initiatives around the world  aiming to protect nature. And when it comes to preserving nature, no one knows more than Indigenous peoples, who have long been the guardians of our planet. A story this week tells how their expertise and traditional knowledge could help manage wildfires. A project in the Swiss Alps, too, looks at how we can solve some of the pressing issues facing us today. Lastly, read up on an exciting find by local communities and scientists, which paints good news for marine ecosystems and species. Enjoy!

Efforts to save cheetahs

In Somaliland and Kenya, efforts to save cheetahs take place both in the field and in the classroom, with coexistence and education at the core of the mission to protect this iconic species. Here's why that matters:

Countries looking to team up to phase out fossil fuels

Burning fossil fuels releases large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, heating up our planet. To turn the tide, Denmark and Costa Rica are looking to work together with other countries to make a difference:

Indigenous peoples' essential knowledge of fires

For centuries, Indigenous peoples have used fire to shape their territories of life - the landscapes they inhabit. This knowledge has always been invaluable, but with rising global temperatures and increased wildfires, it could be life-saving:

Scientists stunned by 400-year old coral

Save the Children - "Support refugee children arriving from Afghanistan" 2021

Relief, and Worry, for Arrivals from Afghanistan - New York Times 8/25/21

Rush an emergency donation now

As tens of thousands of children and families flee the escalating conflict in Afghanistan, Save the Children has mobilized our emergency response team in the United States to support their most urgent needs.

While this situation continues to develop, our teams will be there for Afghan children and families in this critical moment, providing resources and aid, building child-friendly spaces and advocating for children's rights. We also remain committed to resuming our programs in Afghanistan as soon as it is safe to do so. But to make all that possible, we are urgently calling on this community of dedicated champions for children to rush emergency support:

Will you make an emergency donation right now to make a life-changing difference for Afghan refugee children in this moment of need?

Rush an emergency donation now

The recent events in Afghanistan only add to the existing global refugee crisis, which has forced more people to flee violence and persecution than at any other time in history. Refugee children are particularly vulnerable, as education, health care, nutrition and other resources are extremely difficult to access in a crisis like this. The trauma of violence, displacement and the uncertainty that follows also takes an immense toll on children.

With your support right now, we can take the steps needed to help children fleeing terrible violence in Afghanistan grow up healthy, educated and safe. Please, rush every dollar you can right now to help these vulnerable children not only survive but thrive.

Thank you for all you do to create change for the children who need it most, in times of crisis, and always.

"Between yesterday and tomorrow"

«The story of a man who came 17 years ago to Germany.
It's the 31.12.2016, a day in the life of Niaz Ahmadzai from Afghanistan. A never ending story of work, existence, love, familiy and an unfulfilled personality. The perfect integration of a fully functioning machine.»
