WWF - "We need urgent action on wildfires" 2021




Right now, Greece and Turkey are being ravaged by devastating wildfires spreading at an unprecedented rate. The crisis unfolding in both countries needs critical attention, and is rooted in the reality of life on a warming planet. 

In Turkey, at least 252 spots in more than 51 provinces have been affected by the wildfires in the last two weeks. And over 586 wildfires have erupted in Greece over the past week alone, affecting areas across the country. 

Our hearts go out to all the families and communities directly affected by the wildfires. And as the fires continue to spread, we are also concerned at how wildlife is being hit hard. 

For example, Turkey's Antalya province alone hosts 11,870 species, of which 1,421 are endemic and 121 are endangered. And in Greece, the fires pose a severe threat to the habitats of many different species including endangered golden jackals, tortoises, hares, foxes, and hundreds of other animals.
