WWF International - "Protecting coral reefs" 2021


 


Did you know that coral reefs cover less than 0.1% of our ocean, but they are home to 25% of its wildlife? And that more than 500 million people depend on reef fish for food and livelihoods? That's not all, either: coral reefs also help protect coastlines from the damaging effects of waves, storms and floods. 

Pretty amazing, right? All this makes coral reefs one of our planet's most productive, important and life-sustaining places. But with ocean temperatures rising due to climate change, coral reefs are disappearing at an alarming rate, putting people and nature at risk.

Since 1980, half of all coral reefs have been lost. And as the ocean warms and becomes more acidic, we could lose as much as 90% of the world's coral reefs by the end of the century. We can't let that happen. So, where do we go from here? 

For people and nature, we must give our coral reefs a fighting chance of surviving the decades ahead:
